About Hemel Hempstead List

Hemel Hempstead List brings together local businesses, restaurants, shopping destinations, attractions and essential services. Our aim is straightforward: help residents and visitors find relevant recommendations, discover places nearby and explore more of what the town offers. Clear categories and concise explanations make it easier to work out what is useful and what to check next.

Two town centres, different stories

Hemel Hempstead has a distinctive contrast between the historic Old Town and the planned New Town. The Old Town’s High Street and Queensway retain a traditional setting of period buildings, independent shops, pubs and places to eat. St Mary’s Church and the Old Town Hall add civic and architectural points of reference; check the Hall’s current programme before planning around a performance or event.

In the town centre, Marlowes, Riverside and The Forum serve different needs: retail, food outlets, public facilities and services. Jellicoe Water Gardens provide a distinctive landscaped pause within the newer centre. The Magic Roundabout is a recognisable local junction, but for directions use current mapping and road information rather than relying on a landmark description.

The New Town story continues beyond the shopping streets. Neighbourhoods such as Adeyfield, Bennetts End, Grovehill, Highfield, Woodhall Farm, Chaulden and Warners End were shaped by planned post-war expansion. Gadebridge Park gives the north-west of town a major green-space anchor, while Boxmoor and the Box Moor Trust landscape offer a different transition between the residential town and surrounding countryside.

Canal, paper and everyday enterprise

South of the centre, Apsley brings together canal-side life and a paper-making heritage. The Grand Union Canal and its towpath connect recreation with the area’s industrial past, while Frogmore Paper Mill preserves a local paper-making story. Visitor access, tours and activities should be checked with the venue before setting out.

Hemel Hempstead also looks outward. Hemel Hempstead railway station is in Boxmoor, not beside the main shopping streets; Apsley has its own station. The M1 and M25 are reached via the regional road network rather than running through the town centre. Maylands Business Park and Maylands Avenue form a major employment area, distinct from retail-focused Marlowes and the Old Town’s independent businesses.

For leisure, The Snow Centre offers indoor snow sports, and local cricket, football and rugby add community activity. Opening, session and fixture details change, so our lists point readers towards current information rather than treating schedules as permanent.

Local means the right place

Hemel Hempstead is in Dacorum borough, within Hertfordshire. Dacorum Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council have different responsibilities. Leverstock Green has a distinct local-centre identity on the eastern side of town. Bovingdon is a separate village southwest of Hemel, Kings Langley a neighbouring village to the southeast, and Berkhamsted a separate historic town to the west. We identify nearby places as such instead of presenting them as Hemel Hempstead neighbourhoods.

Our lists are selective, not a complete directory or a guarantee that an option is right for everyone. We do not invent businesses, prices, opening hours or event details. Confirm important information with the business, venue, operator or authority before acting on it.

Hemel Hempstead List is an information and recommendations site, not a shop or booking service. Read our Editorial Policy & Corrections and Disclaimer for more on how we handle local information. To suggest an update, contact us.
